  • Step One - Prepare your wax. Start by breaking your wax into small pieces. Set up a double boiler, and place your wax pieces in it to melt. Try to reach a temperature of 170-175 degrees F. Do not add any additives until your wax is completely melted.
  • Step Two - You can work on this step while your wax is melting. Connect the wick to your container by using the plastic barrel of a ball-point-pen. Straighten your wicks, which should be pre-tabbed. Stick one wick through the barrel of the pen. Apply hot glue to the base of the tab, then guide the barrel into the container, right in the center. Remove the barrel.
  • Step Three - Secure the wick to the top of the container using a clothespin. This will keep the wick centered while the wax is cooling.
  • Step Four - Preheat your container to 150 degrees F. You can use a heat gun, but be careful not to get the container too hot.
  • Step Five - Fill your container. Leave room for the wick and the lid. Allow the wax to completely cool before you proceed. This might be more than six hours. Save some of the wax for step six.
  • Step Six - When your candle cools, you will notice that it sinks down a little in the middle. Use the leftover wax to refill the candle, just above the previous level, to hide refill seams.
  • Step Seven - Remove the clothespin and trim your wick to about a quarter of an inch.
Now you have created a beautiful container candle! Here are some tips to ensure your pioneer candle making goes as easy as possible.

Candle Making Tips

Make sure while you are working that you keep your area clean. You do not want any residue to make its way into your wax during the process. Be careful with your candle making wax. Wax can burn easily, so do not let the temperature go above 180 degrees F. Work slowly! Do not leave your melting wax unattended. Also, make sure there are no children or pets in the room,as they might cause accidents.

When you are done with your candle, do not pour your left-over wax down the drain. It will create clogs, and you may want to use it again. Pour it into a safe container for future use. To clean up wax that drips on a hard surface, simply let it dry, then scrape it off. If wax falls on a soft surface, place several layers of paper towels on the spill and iron it with a very hot iron. What will happen is the wax will melt and the paper towels will absorb the spill.

Safety Considerations When Making Candles

Melted wax is extremely hot, and can cause serious burns. Always handle your wax with extreme caution, and do not let small children or animals near you while you work. Keep a fire extinguisher handy, and do not try to put out any possible wax fires with water - it will not work. You can smother a fire with a cooking pot lid. Also, some of your add ins, such as fragrances, can cause serious damage to plastic material and your skin. Handle them carefully.
