The Process of Lampwork Bead Making

The most common of the jewelry bead making techniques is the lampwork bead making. The first thing you need to do is prepare your mandrel. The mandrel is a piece of wire cut into 9-12 inch pieces. Prepare the mandrel by dipping it in a clay substance and letting it dry. Then you will choose your glass and heat the glass and the mandrel with your torch.
After they are hot, rotate the mandrel and allow the glass to wind itself onto the mandrel. Using a paddle, shaping your glass etc. This is the hardest and longest part of the bead making process. After you have achieved the shape you want, allow the bead to cool. Then use thread, picks, or other tools to decorate your bead. Beads can be decorated with colored glass or metals. When you have for finished product, put it into a kiln to be annealed.

An additional lampwork beading technique is using multiple layers to create chevron beads. A few types of glass allow for mouth blown creation. Some countries use powdered glass to make their beads. Another type of bead creation altogether is paper bead making, which is easier and less time consuming. Paper beads are made from scraps of paper that are wound around an object. Glue is used to keep the beads wound, and clear polish is applied to the top layer to create a finish.

Safety Considerations When Making Beads

whenever working with a torch or kiln, be sure to wear protective glasses. The effect of the UV and infrared rays are damaging to the eyes after prolonged exposure. Also, keep your torch away from any flammable materials. When not in use, be sure the torch is stored in a safe location where children and animals do not have access to it. Be sure to use protective gear on your hands if you will be handling heated glass or wire. Finally, be sure to have a fire extinguisher within reach. Keep safety as your number one consideration

Some Final Tips for Making Bead Jewelry

Designing and creating beautiful beads is not the final step in making bead jewelry. Once you have your beads, it's time to use them to actually assemble a piece of jewelry. The beads need to be strung on thread. Choose a thread that is thick and durable, but flexible enough to allow for movement. Threads with vinyl in them work well for bead jewelry. Finally, you will need to choose and mount a clasp. There are a wide variety of clasps on the market today. Look for a clasp that appears to hold well. Clasps are usually attached by tying them to the thread on which the beads are strung.

By purchasing and using quality glass bead making supplies, you can ensure that you will create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry that you will be proud to wear. The process of bead making can seem intimidating at first. Consider purchasing a kit or taking a class to get started. With the right instruction, the challenge of bead jewelry making is a fun and rewarding hobby!
