Differences between Knitting and Crochet or Crochet vs Knitting

Crochet vs knitting is one such strong debate. In knitting, two long needles are used to create a stitch. In crocheting, a single hook is used with the thread being fed through the hand and over one index finger. Crotchet involves mastering a variety of stitches while knitting patterns are achieved with unique combinations of only two basic stitches.
In general, knitting is used primarily to make articles of clothing while crochet is a more decorative form of handwork.

Although some people can learn to crochet or knit by browsing crochet books and magazines or by using instructional materials found online, most people find it almost impossible to become proficient without one-on-one supervision. A complete crochet instruction kit would be able to show you how to crochet and do the basic stitches but an experienced "stitcher" will help you to achieve correct hand position and to develop the rhythm needed to achieve a good work pace. Once you have developed a degree of facility, free crochet patterns and basic knitting patterns are easy to acquire and will allow you to complete a wide range of projects.

Crocheting and knitting are considered to be cost effective hobbies. Although both the yarn and the thread can be quite expensive depending on the grade and material used, most items produces are still less expensive than comparable retail pieces. Additionally, hand work like crocheting and knitting can help to relieve stress because they require sufficient concentration to divert the mind from more troubling thoughts. Hand work requires both attention to detail and good hand / eye coordination.

Any form of handwork brings out your artistic skills. Just because you're following a pattern does not mean that your imagination is not engaged. When "stitchers" become proficient at their craft they commonly divert from the written instructions to inject more of their own personality in their projects.

In the end, whether you learn how to crochet or decide to take up knitting may be a matter of personal choice. And there's absolutely no reason why you can't do both. Most people who can crochet find it easy to take up knitting and knitters find the feel of a crochet hook to be natural and usable. With the availability of free crochet patterns and the beautiful selections in thread and yarn now available, you won't be sorry pursuing one or both of these forms of handwork.
